EMDHR Welcomes UN Human Rights Council Resolution on Eritrea

The Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (EMDHR) welcomes the resolution on Eritrea that was passed by the Human Rights Council in Geneva on 03 June 2016. This follows the Commission of Inquiry (COI) on Human Rights in Eritrea report which found crimes against humanity has been committed in Eritrea by the ruling regime since 1991. This is a new Chapter in Eritrean history and opens the doors for those who have suffered at the hands of the Eritrean Regime. It is therefore critical that whichever mechanism is used, the end result is that those who have committed crimes against humanity are held accountable for their crimes and that the Eritrean people get justice in an open, competent, and transparent judicial system.

We therefore call upon the UN and International organisations to ensure that all the crimes are properly investigated and that the voice of the Eritrean people is heard, and those who have been victims of the regime are properly supported, rehabilitated and compensated. We also call for the safety and protection of Eritrean asylum seekers and refugees who have fled the regime, especially those in distress in Libya, Sudan, Egypt (Sinai), State of Israel and Ethiopia.

Finally, we ask all member governments to ensure the protection of Eritrean communities from the the threats and intimidation of the Eritrean regime. Those who have fled the country need to feel safe and secure in their host countries whilst at the same time provided with legal and humanitarian assistance.
