EMDHR 18 September Statement

Today marks the 13th year since 11 of the members of the G-15, high ranking officials and prominent leaders of the EPLF were arbitrarily arrested after they called for the implementation of the 1997 ratified constitution.  Their  arrests  were  preceded  and followed  by  the  arrests  of  many  innocent  Eritreans including most of the editors and journalist of the fledgling private newspapers which also were closed.

EMDHR News Update

In line with EMDHR's objectives to get as much support and solidarity from international, governmental and non-governmental organizations, in the last couple of months EMDHR managed to meet with different high ranking South African government officials. In the high-level meetings the EMDHR pointed out the current dire political, social and economic situation of Eritrea and stressed that the South African government should play its leading role diplomatically to curb the human tragedy in Eritrea.

Optimism from Frankfurt: My Personal Impressions

Just came back from the Eritrean Festival in Frankfurt in Germany. It was super-yibel awedadiba! For so long now I have been looking for a good enough reason to venture into Germany and there it came- Frankfurt Festival. We had been invited to present the outcome of The Pretoria Declaration which came out of the May 2014 Pretoria Workshop. I didn’t know what to expect.

Tragic News of another boat disaster

The EMDHR is shocked and deeply saddened to learn from contacts in Libya that the boat which has been missing with around 200 Eritreans had collided with another ship/boat and capsized. The boat is believed to have left the Libyan shores at the end of June 2014. According to our informants in Libya only 25 of them survived and are now in unknown prison.

EMDHR Refugee Day Statement

The Eritrean Movement for Democracy and Human Rights (EMDHR) takes the opportunity on this year’s refugee day to highlight the plight of Eritrean refugees and asylum seekers around the world. Eritrea is one of the top refugee producing countries in the world despite the fact that it is one of the smallest countries. Hundreds of thousands of Eritreans are fleeing their country due to the political repression, human rights violations, religious persecution, and forced conscription and forced labour committed by the authoritarian one-man regime.

EYSC, EMC, and EMDHR Joint Statement on the Death of Mr. Ahmed Nasser

We have learned the death of Mr. Ahmed Nasser, a veteran of the Eritrean revolution with great sadness and would like to express our sympathy and condolences to his family, colleagues, and the entire Eritrean people. Mr. Ahmed Nasser has dedicated his life to the Eritrean revolution and continued his struggle in the quest for freedom and democracy in our country. His passing is made more tragic by the fact that he never got the chance to enter his beloved country and live and rest in it with dignity.
